How Long Are Shoelaces?

Shoelace length varies depending on the number of eyelets, size of the shoe, and how much lace you want to be left free at the end. On average, the length of shoelaces can range from 24-inches to 59-inches or even more. Shorter shoelaces are better for fewer eyelets and smaller feet while longer shoelaces are going to be used for adult laces or even boots. Below, we’ll take a look at some of the methods you can use to find out how long your shoelaces are. You can also find some handy shoelace length sizing charts and some answers to FAQs you might have about shoelace length.

Determining Shoelace Length

Count the Number of Eyelets

If you don’t have your shoelaces in front of you, the easiest way to determine shoelace length is by counting how many pairs of eyelets are on the shoe. Even though different brands might have slight differences in shoelace length depending on spacing, you can generally still use the eyelets to help you buy replacement shoelaces. For example, a shoe that has 3-5 eyelets usually requires a shoelace that is about 30 inches, or 75 centimeters.

You should note that when this says “eyelets”, it’s referring to the number of pairs of eyelets. This means that a shoe with 5 eyelets according to the chart actually has 10 eyelets total.

Number of EyeletsShoelace Length
2-424 inches (60cm)
3-530 inches (75cm)
5-636 inches (90cm)
6-745 inches (114cm)
8-1055 inches (140cm)
10-1259 inches (150cm)
12+72 inches (182cm)

Consider the Type of Shoe

Alternatively, you can determine how long shoelaces are by considering the types of shoes. Shorter shoelaces are used for shoes with fewer eyelets, usually worn by kids’ feet. Longer shoelaces may be used on adult boots. Here are a few common shoe styles and the most commonly used length of shoelaces.

Type of ShoeShoelace Length
Children's shoes for a child around 5-6 years old27 inches
Children's shoes for a child between 6 and 1136 inches
Low cut shoes for teens and adults45 inches
High top shoes with 5-6 eyelets or more54 inches
Adult boots or high-tops with 10 or more eyelets59+ inches

Measure Your Current Laces

One of the most accurate ways to find out what shoelace size you need is by measuring your existing shoelaces. If you’re just trying to replace the ones you already have, measure them from end to end. The number in centimeters (or inches) is what you’ll need if you want shoelaces that have the same fit.

In addition to being really accurate, this is a great way to adjust the length of your current shoes too, if you prefer something shorter or longer than the standard size. Just remember that by shortening the shoelace, you are shortening both sides. Don’t go too short, or you won’t have enough length to tie your shoes once they are through all the eyelets.

If you are trying to buy longer or shorter laces, start by finding out how much extra that you want to add/remove. For longer laces, you’ll want to measure one of the ends. Remember to leave yourself enough extra that you can tie the shoe. If you aren’t sure, tie the shoe first, then measure the excess string at the end. Keep in mind that you’ll need to double this number. For example, if it’s too long by 1.5-inches on one side, then you’ll need a shoelace that is 3 inches shorter for both sides.

Even though you should be able to determine the shoelace length you need with the tips so far, it’s important to remember that not all shoe styles are the same. Here are some popular shoes and their standard-sized shoelaces. Like you would expect, the shoes with more eyelets (like high-tops) require more shoelace length than a basic sneaker.

Shoelace Length in Men’s vs. Women’s Shoes

Something else that you should keep in mind when shopping for shoelaces is that men’s shoes generally require a few more inches than women’s shoes. As you can see from the chart of popular shoes above, a Woman’s High-Top Converse only needs about 54″ of shoelace, while a Men’s High-Top Converse is recommended to have 63″ shoelaces.

In some cases, the difference is caused by the number of eyelets. In other cases, men’s shoes sometimes have more room between the eyelets than women’s shoes. This accommodates larger, wider foot sizes. If you aren’t sure, the best thing to do is measure the existing shoelace for the perfect fit. Alternatively, you could find out if the manufacturer recommends a certain length of a shoelace. Generally, they recommend the size that is already sold with the shoe.

Why It’s Important to Choose the Right Shoelace Length

The length of a shoelace determines how easy (or difficult) it is to keep the shoes tied. Shoelaces that are too long for a pair of shoes are harder to tie. Plus, they create longer knots that are more likely to get stepped on, so they are also easy to come untied.

When shoelaces are too short, they become difficult (or impossible) to tie. Some people do prefer to leave 1 or 2 eyelets open at the top, especially if they want more of a “slip-on” style with high-top shoes. However, this does affect the overall fit of the shoe and how securely it hugs the ankle.

FAQs – Shoelace Length

Does it matter if shoelaces are flat or round?

No, it doesn’t matter if shoelaces are flat or round. The measurements that are important for shoelaces is the overall length from end to end. Most eyelet holes are pretty standard-sized, so choosing flat or round shoelaces is a matter of preference.

Flat shoelaces have the advantage of cinching down better. This means shoes are less likely to come untied, which might be a benefit for younger children or people that play sports. The major benefit of round shoelaces is that they are more durable. They’re less likely to fray or become damaged than flat shoelaces.

Can I cut shoelaces that are too long?

While you can cut shoelaces that are too long, it affects the durability and wear of the laces. You’ll notice that all styles of shoelaces have a harder tip at the end. Shoelaces are made by weaving together strands of fabric, then sealing them at the ends. The harder tip is made from plastic or metal and it stops the shoelaces from becoming frayed.

If you cut shoelaces that are too long, you’re also cutting off the tip. Shoelaces that have been trimmed will eventually become frayed at the end. They are also harder to tie, especially once they start fraying. Instead, use the number of eyelets to determine what size shoelaces you need first. Then, you don’t have to worry about long, cumbersome shoelaces.

Do I need to put the shoelaces through all the eyelets?

Technically, you do not need to use all the eyelets on a shoe. Some people leave the top row or two of laces open, which makes shoes slide on more easily. This is especially true for shoes that they wear a lot. It’s really common practice on high tops.

However, there are some considerations to keep in mind. When you don’t use all the eyelets, it affects the amount of ankle support the shoe provides. This might make them a poor choice for running or sports. Additionally, leaving the shoe open at the top all the time may affect the overall shape of the shoe and even damage it. If you want to keep your shoes looking nice at the top, then you should put the shoelaces through all the eyelets.
